vietnam visa Bai Dinh, the biggest pagoda in ASEAN

Ninh Binh is famous for a lot of destinations such as Tam Coc Bich Dong, Phap Diem church, Hoa Lu ancient capital, Bai Dinh pagoda,…Here we visit  Bai Dinh Pagoda where is famous for its great size and imposingness and 500 Arhat statues made of stone and stand higher than human’s head.

Located behind a range of limestone mountains in Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province, Bai Dinh is only 6km away from Hoa Lu ancient capital to the northwest. Bai Dinh Pagoda Mountain is one of the most important attractions of Trang An Eco tourist complex. Bai Dinh Pagoda Mountain has many sites to visit, such as the “Voi phuc tho Duc ong mat do” Cave (the elephant lies prostrate to worship the red-face-Master); the Buddhism Cave (or called Sang Cave); and Tien Cave (or called Toi Cave) which worships Thuong Ngan Queen with many beautiful stalactites, making tourists feel that they are in a fairy place.

Bai Dinh Pagoda Mountain is 200m high. It lies between a half – mountain, half – plain with the area of nearly 150,000m2. This is an outstanding tourist site in Ninh Binh because of its cultural and historical values as well as its diverse ecological system. In 1997, Bai Dinh Pagoda Mountain was recognized as a cultural and historical heritage of Vietnam.

Due to its historical and culutural value, especailly its ideal location in term of geomoncy. A new Bai Dinh pagoda was built next to the old one facing South East. This pagoda had an area of 700 ha, located on Ba Rau hills, near Hoang Long River. This is large complex which includes many items built in several different stages. The architecture features large cubes, but it’s gloriously bold architectural mark on Vietnam as the materials are local (Ninh Binh green stone, local wood), Bat Trang Porcelain … This difference in most Bai Dinh pagoda architecture shown in dark brown curved roofs surround the tail soaring phoenix bird, it’s not the same style as those in Chinese pagoda. Decors of the pagoda are highlighted with markers of the handicaft villages known as casting the Y Yen, Ninh Van manipulated stone, wood, Phu Loc Ninh Hai embroidery.

The new one has proudly recieved the Great statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni made of bronze and weighs 100-tons, three bronze statues Tam The (50 tons for each), two huge bronze bells, one weighs 27 tons, the other weighs 36 tons and 500 statues of “La Han” (Arhats) sculptured by Ninh Van craftmans. When the new Bai Dinh Pagoda is completed, it will be a big religious tourist site of Vietnam in general and Ninh Binh in particular. A “great bell” with the weight of 60 tons was casted and located on the top of hill on the way come to the main sanctuary. The Great Bell is so big that it is estimated if wanting to sound the bell, it will need a big log of wood and four puller the log of wood to prod into the bell.

Though the construction of Bai Dinh Pagoda has not yet finished, the reputation of this new Pagoda was far-resounding. The visitors visit Bai Dinh every year and have come to burn incense before the bronze statues of Buddha which are still being covered by scaffolds. While far from the large site 2km, if sharp-sighted the passers will see a humble three-door temple gate loacated next the roadside. Through the three-door temple gate, turn to the small path rather slope, go up to the top of mountain we will see the Bai Dinh Pagoda (old), full of green moss and quiet. There is virtually none knowing to a “Great Buddhist Pagoda” will be going to set the record of Asean being executed at the site over there.

In 1977, Bai Dinh Pagoda Mountain was recognised as a cultural and historical heritage site and it will become the largest religious tourist centre in Viet Nam

As a great historical relics, Bai Dinh Pagoda cherishes both: enchanting scenery and deep history. So don’t hesitate no longer, please get Vietnam Visa and enjoy the beauty here.
