Locating off the southern coast of Vietnam and Cambodia is Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam. The tear-shaped Phu Quoc (Vietnamese Phú Qu?c) is part of the Kiên Giang province. The distance from Phú Qu?c to mainland Viet Nam is 45 km to Hà Tiên and 120 km to R?ch Giá. The island is 50 km long (from north to south) and 25 km wide,  is closer to the Cambodian mainland than Vietnam. Most of the accommodations in the island are along this beach. There are other varied accommodations available throughout the island ranging from cheap bungalows to beach resorts. Duong Dong is the largest town in Phu Quoc Island situated to the north of the Long Beach. Even a few years back Phu Quoc was known for its fish sauce. Today it is known as one of the major Vietnam popular destinations.

During the colonial rule of the French and the war with America Phu Quoc Island was used as a prison. Ruins of the prison are visible even today. After Vietnam gained independence in 1975 this island was used as a re-education camp.

Nearly half the island lets you view the unspoilt beauty of nature. Phu Quoc Island is covered with forests and the beaches are deserted creating an enchanting environment in the island. It provides a spectacular view with the perfect fusion of its blue waters, sandy beaches, and beautiful landscapes. In a visit to the island,  do not forget to view the magical sunset from the beach. The famous beaches in the island, other than the Long Beach, are Bai Dan and Bai Sao. Away from the beaches are the pepper fields, the rain forest, and the Suoi Da Ban river with its waterfalls.

The natural park is definitely worth a look.

– Lying the length on the beach, doing nothing, enjoying fresh air of the island or sunbathing, perhaps taking the odd swim.

– Looking beyond the beach, nature lovers may explore around the center of Phu Quoc, where there’s verdant rainforest with the Suoi Ban River running through it, waterfalls and natural springs. Here is ideal for a honey moon.

Explore the Island on a Motorbike

– Travelling around the island by motorbike is one of most fun things you can do, but beware – many of the island’s roads are not paved.

– Discovering Bai Sao on the east coast which is reputed to be the best beach on the island with white sand and turquoise sea.

– Finding a deserted spot on long beach to stop for a swim. In the northern part of the island the terrain gets more mountainous, and the roads a little more bumpy. Lots of isolated beaches are waiting to be found, along the way up to Dai Beach and beyond, many small fishing villages are passed.

National Park

– Visiting the national park, created in 2001 by the Vietnamese government, covers more than half the island. Thick foliage covers the mountainous slopes that are home to langurs, macaques, loris’, otters, hornbills and fruit bats. The best way to visit the park is to book a tour with your hotel as most of the trails are not signposted very well. It’s not a good idea to visit the park when it’s been raining heavily as you will get very muddy.

  Snorkelling

– Scuba diving around the north of Phu Quoc and  heading to the pristine reefs of both hard and soft corals that teem with colourful fish around An Thoi.Nice reasonably shallow dive sites are numerous but don’t expect to any manta rays or large pelagic fish. Dive centres can be found easily around the island.

– Riding by a ferry can be taken from the Rach Gia to the island. It takes around two and a half hours though it is better to avoid the ferry in rainy seasons.
